How to Choose the Color of Your Front Door

The front door is the beacon that draws the eyes of whoever beholds your home. Color is, therefore, an important element. Here are tips on how to choose the color of your front entry door.

Start With Classic Colors

Certain colors have achieved the “classic” status because they simply look good on most exterior color palettes. Neutral colors, such as black, brown and gray, are what can be considered as evergreen: they never look dated. Using classic colors and natural finishes as a starting point will give you an idea on which colors work and which don’t. They will also be your safety net in case any other color doesn’t work.

Add Visual Pop With Bright Colors

Entry door colors can deviate from established exterior color palettes. This gives you more flexibility to try out different colors, including bright ones like barnhouse red or lime green. Bright colors add pop to somber or neutral exterior color palettes. They also make it easy for guests to find your front entry right from the curb.

We at Renewal by Andersen® chose to offer ProVia® entry doors because they meet or exceed the quality standards that we have for our replacement windows. You can choose from a wide selection of styles, hardware and – of course – colors and finishes.

View Samples During Different Times of the Day

You’re not expected to choose your entry door color right off the bat, but you should at least have a few colors in mind before you start reaching out to your door contractor. When you do, ask your contractor for color samples or swatches. Some colors look different during different times of the day, and the best way to narrow down your choices is to see how they will look against your home’s existing color palette.

Take your samples, and place them on the porch or anywhere near the front door. View them during different times of the day, from sunrise to sundown. Eliminate colors that don’t seem to work. By the end of the day, you should be able to narrow down your choices down to one or two.
