How to Inspect Your Windows After a Summer Storm

Windows are part of your home’s exterior and, therefore, exposed to the same risks as the roof or siding. Such risks include damage from summer storms. Here’ how to inspect your windows after a summer storm.

Document the Damage

Storm-damaged windows may end up being a part of an insurance claim that also includes your roof. Don’t try to clean anything up just yet as your insurance provider will need to send a representative to assess the extent of the storm damage. If you need to move anything – perhaps, there’s broken glass, or something is blocking the exits – document the damage by taking photos and video.

Inspect Your Windows

Keep an eye out for the following when you inspect your windows:

Wind damage – Sudden gusts of wind can be strong enough to damage windows, particularly old windows equipped with single-pane glass. Look for stress cracks where the glass and the sash meet. When looking for replacement windows, consider opting for double-pane glass with grilles installed between the panes. They help reduce some of the stress caused by high winds.

Impact damage – Wind can also pick up small things like pebbles and debris, and launch them into your windows. Some may be small enough not to shatter the glass, but they may cause cracks and scratches as well as dents on the frames.

Water infiltration – Wind-driven rain can force itself through the weatherstripping and gaps between frame and sash. Keep an eye out for water stains that appear to have originated from these areas.

After Inspection

Make sure you have documented the storm damage to your windows, and then call your insurance provider. If your windows are still under warranty, call your window replacement company. Depending on how extensive the damage to your house is, a call to a home restoration contractor may also be in order.
