Errors Skilled and Experienced Window Installers Don’t Make
Choosing the right contractor for your home window replacement project can help ensure its success. Make sure you hire a reputable installer to make the most of your investment. Before signing anything, you should do your research, ask for proof of license and contract, and read reviews.
Here are mistakes good window installers don’t make.
An experienced installer knows that window openings vary by manufacturer and window style. While windows can be made to fit nearly all sizes of rough openings, manufacturers still build standard sizes.
No Back Slope
The sill on a rough opening must be sloped to ensure water safely flows away from your home. Contractors achieve this by cutting cripple studs at an angle or by including a sill-wedge or sloped pan once a rough opening has been framed in.
Using the Wrong Jamb Size
With replacement windows that come with jambs, the width of the jambs should be added if the finished surface of the interior walls will include plaster, tongue and groove, or anything that is thicker than ½ inch drywall. Your installer should add the width of a jamb when installing a window on a sheathing that’s at least 7/16 inches in width.
Faulty Flashing Sealing
A good installer will make sure the sills are clean and free from debris before so the flashing tapes and membranes adhere properly. Certain kinds of tapes and membranes fail to adhere to cold weather. Installers must only use products that meet the manufacturer’s guidelines when it comes to cold weather applications.
Working With Dirty hands
As much as possible, foam and sealant must not touch the finished parts of a window. Removing stains from unfinished wood can also be difficult. Experienced window contractors always have an extra pair of gloves with them for sealant and foam application.
"Excellent service and product! They checked in with me every few weeks while we were waiting for the order. I was impressed with Sam, who measured my windows and headed the installation crew. He was respectful and patient with his team. They cleaned up after themselves. Before the new windows I had huge windows that didn’t open. Now I feel much safer and get better temperatures in those rooms."

"My experience with Anderson Renewal was amazing! From the first meeting with Miranda to choose my windows and doors to the installation provided by Tim and his crew was a pleasure! I just bought a home built in the 1960's that needed new windows and a new double front door with sidelights. As everyone knows Anderson Windows are great, but it was the people I interacted with from Anderson that made it such a great experience. It took three days for the windows and door to be installed and they "worked" every minute they were here. My huge front door took most of the day to install because they had to put in a new header and other improvements to make it fit! They even put up new drywall on the inside. Many people in the neighborhood have stopped by to comment on my beautiful front door! I think the crew left my house cleaner than it was before they started! Constantly cleaning up after themselves. I am thrilled with my windows and feel lucky to have met the team at Anderson."
