Tips to Make Your Home Cooler Without Relying Too Much on AC

The blistering heat of the summer sun gives us more reasons to rely on our air conditioning units. While it is good to use them to cool down our homes during the hottest parts of the day, letting them run for too long can cause an uptick in our electrical consumption. This will surely reflect on next month’s utility bills.

Here are some tips on how you can make your home cooler this summer without relying too much on your AC unit.

Open Your Windows

Letting in the summer breeze is an effective way to cool the home while limiting your use of the AC. The key to this is finding out which direction the wind blows. As soon as you feel the breeze, open the windows fully to ventilate your indoors. This works best at nighttime and in the early morning when temperatures are cooler. Close them as soon as sunlight is directly hitting the windows.

Utilize Window Treatments

Window treatments can also be of help in keeping indoor temperatures cooler. Closing the blinds, for instance, will prevent heat absorption through the closed windows. Consider installing shutters or rolling blinds on the window units that are in direct sunlight in the morning and afternoon.

Consider Window Replacement

Sometimes, investing in replacement windows makes more sense. Tackle this project if your existing fixtures no longer provide much-needed insulation, especially during the summer. Energy-efficient windows on the market today are equipped with low-emissivity (low-E) glass to reduce heat gain and keep your home cooler.

At Renewal by Andersen® of Southwest Missouri, we offer various window styles that feature High-Performance™ Low-E4® glass and the company’s exclusive Fibrex® material for the frame and sash. These make our windows last longer and perform better in summer. The result is a much more effective thermal barrier, helping you achieve lower cooling bills.

"When we purchased the windows at the end of February we had been informed the lead time would be middle of August for installation. I was okay with this as they had been straight forward about the time frame. As the process moved forward I was kept informed via email at the various stages. I had received an email at the email of May stating the windows have finished being built and we can schedule installation. I was thrilled to have them be installed by the end of June. The installers showed up on time had been very courteous while performing the installation. They had scheduled 4 days for the installation and had completed it within 3 days. There was an issue with our front door as it was on back order and they brought out the wrong door by mistake, however they installed a temporary door until our door arrived and then came back out and installed the new door. I would highly recommend them to anyone needing replacement doors and or windows."

"A phenomenal removal and replacement of our front door. The installers were very detail oriented and very meticulous. This was the second time we've had doors replace with Renewal by Andersen of SW Missouri and both time our expectations were exceeded."

"The replacement windows are great quality and look great! The windows we are slowly replacing are original to the house, and are Andersen windows that are 40± years old! Our installers are the best! They went above and beyond what was expected of them. I highly recommend!! A+"
